Toro Chooses GATX Logistics To Operate Distribution Centers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Toro Company has selected GATX Logistics, Inc. to operate its network of finished goods distribution centers. The first of these centers, located in Mira Loma, Calif., and Sardis, Miss., will become operational in the fourth quarter of 1998. Additional centers will open in the year 2000. These distribution centers will replace those currently operated by Toro and will support Toro's manufacturing plants for outdoor maintenance and beautification products for consumer, commercial and irrigation products used in residential and professional turf maintenance.

GATX Logistics will provide the systems integration, logistics services management, facilities, supervision and labor needed for improved logistics support throughout Toro's distribution network. Toro's inventory and logistics network will be managed through GATX Logistics' proprietary TLS logistics management software, which will interface via EDI with Toro's new SAP\R3 enterprise system for total supply chain management.

''GATX Logistics has considerable expertise and experience in managing logistics systems, and this will be a catalyst to help Toro become the best,'' said Kendrick B. Melrose, chairman and chief executive officer of The Toro Company.

''We are pleased to have been chosen as Toro's partner for outsourced logistics,'' said Joseph A. Nicosia, president and chief executive officer of GATX Logistics, Inc. ''Our experience in managing national networks for finished goods distribution, as well as the management of parts and returned goods, was instrumental in demonstrating our capabilities to one of the industry's leaders in outdoor maintenance and beautification products.''
