Our Vision

GATX Corporation, founded in 1898, is the leading global railcar lessor, owning fleets in North America, Europe, and Asia. In addition, we operate the largest fleet of U.S.-flagged vessels on the Great Lakes and, jointly with Rolls-Royce plc, we own one of the largest aircraft spare engine lease portfolios in the world. Our vision is to be recognized as the finest railcar leasing company in the world by our customers, our shareholders, our employees and the communities where we operate. We strive to operate our business in a manner consistent with that vision and a view toward delivering on our commitments to our various constituencies.

Our Customers

Our success in delivering for our customers is best represented by our industry-leading railcar fleet utilization in North America. Our top ten customers have been with GATX, on average, for approximately 43 years, which is a testament to the strength of our relationships. One reason our customers choose GATX is because the operation of a safe, modern, compliant and efficient railcar fleet is essential to their operations. GATX owns one of the largest and most capable railcar repair and maintenance networks in North America and has one of the largest railcar engineering staffs as well, meaning that we have both the capability and expertise our customers require to support their complex and diverse railcar fleets.


Our Shareholders

Our success in delivering for our shareholders is evidenced by our strong long-term shareholder return. Over the past ten years, GATX has outperformed both the S&P 500 and the Russell 3000. In addition, 2018 marked the 100th consecutive year in which GATX paid a dividend to its common shareholders, a record that few companies can match.

  • In 2017, GATX was a repeat recipient of the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Responsible Care® Partner of the Year Award. GATX is a Responsible Care® Partner in both the ACC’s program in the United States and the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada’s Responsible Care® Program, and we were specifically recognized for our superb performance and safety record in the distribution, transportation, storage, use, treatment, disposal and/or sales and marketing of chemicals.   • GATX’s TankTrainer,™ a 33,500-gallon tank car outfitted with a variety of fittings, coatings, and configurations that has provided a unique learning experience to more than 17,000 first responders, customers, rail industry participants, and employees since its inception in 1993.   • Our employees also work to support the local communities in which we live and work. For example, GATX is the largest single corporate donor in Make-A-Wish Illinois’ history and an important supporter of community efforts such as the Big Shoulders Fund and Breakthrough Shelters in Chicago.
